Log Home Building Styles
The three basic log building styles used by Central Oregon Log Homes are Scandinavian Full Scribe, Full Round with Chinking and Flat on Flat. Each log building style is available in different log sizes and log species.
Scandinavian Full Scribe

The basics of Hand Crafted full scribe log homes is that logs are scribe fit to each other. The logs are hand peeled leaving bumps, knots, flat spots, bow twist and they taper big at the butt end small at the tip. When these logs are fit tightly together (full scribed) they have a unique look, the corners are saddle notched or shrink to fit notched. The standard sizes are 8" tips to 14" butts, other sizes are available.
Chink Style Log Homes
Chink Style are the most authentic American style log building we make, like Full Scribe House logs are hand peeled heaving bumps, knots, flat spots, bow and twist and they taper big at one end and small at the other. The logs are not fit together laterally. Instead a chinking compound is applied. The chinking comes in 5 different colors. The Chinking allows the logs to shrink and swell (move) without cracking and losing its seal.
The corners of a Chink style log home are saddle notched or shrink to fit notched. Standard log sizes are 8" tips to 14"butts other sizes are available.
Flat to Flat
On a Flat to Flat Log Home, 2 sides of a log are ran through a band saw mill. Three sides can also be ran leaving a Flat interior wall. The logs are are stacked Flat to Flat with 2 strips of sealant between the flats and laged together or thru roded together. The log home corners are butt and passed together saddle notched together, or shrink to fit notched. THis style of log work is the most affordable. Standard flat to flat logs measure 7'-8', other sizes are available.
Log Post and Log Beam Homes are best described as a timber frame home with Logs instead of timbers.
A Log Post and Beam home has log posts bearing on the main floor framing or continuing through the main floor framing and bearing on concrete. The posts continue up and support an upper structure log headers, log floor joists and log roof purlias, a log star system, log mantels andlog railing can also be incoporated into your log post and beam home.
The log post and beam homes do not have the design limitations that log homes do. Log home design limitations are due to setteling. Without these limitations the design process is wide open for design ideas.
Working with our designer or yours, Central Oregon Log Homes can create a custom log post and beam home, or using any standard home floor plan we can adapt it into a log post and beam home. Just call Kevin at 541.420.9244.
The natural character of hand crafted logs work along with the flexibility of designing a house makes log and beam building increasingly more popular. Since there are not any walls to stack there is less log building to be done . This lowers the cost but still allows for the natural beauty that hand crafted logs bring to any home.

The popularity of log and timber accents continues to grow as customers explore the endless possibilities, with a more budget price. Log Accents provide the beauty and warmth of logs to conventional frame construction. We custom build all our accents to your exact specifications. Our projects call out for natural log accents Central Oregon Log Homes is there to deliver. Log Accents can be added to any type of construction. When used inside, outside or both, logs can add that unique lodge feeling that sets your home a cut above the rest.
We can supply our customers with natural hand-peeled logs. We also can supply log trusses, log stair railing, log siding, and fireplace mantels. For your special projects we can help you design that special log home feeling, in an accent.
A log accented home is very similar to a log post and beam home. The biggest difference is in a log post and beam home, the posts and beams are mostly structural or all structural. In a log accented house you have very little and sometimes none of the logs are structural. Most of the standard building practices are used. This lowers the cost yet still gives a custom hand crafted log feel. Prices are around $100 per square foot.
A log accented home can be built using any standard house plan, prominent areas such as an entrance way, great room, porch post, mantels, and hand railing. This gives your home the lodge feel of a log home and allows you a more cost effictive method to provide the warmth that only hand crafted logs can provide. The amount and extent of log accents can vary hugely, depending on house design and a client's wishes and budget.
